How the SIP Calculator Works

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) lets you invest a fixed amount in a mutual fund every month. Each instalment buys units and keeps growing until you redeem, so money invested early has the longest time to compound.

This calculator assumes each instalment is invested at the start of the month and grows at a monthly rate equal to the yearly return divided by 12. The formula is Value = M × ((1 + i)n − 1) / i × (1 + i), where M is the monthly amount, i is the monthly rate and n is the number of months. A lumpsum is grown once a year at the yearly return.

Worked example

Investing ₹10,000 every month for 10 years at an average 12% a year: you put in ₹12,00,000, and the estimated value is about ₹23,23,391. That means roughly ₹11,23,391 comes from returns. Change the inputs above to see your own numbers.

Step-up SIP: the easiest way to grow more

Most people's income rises every year, but their SIP stays the same. A step-up SIP increases the monthly amount by a fixed percentage each year. Open Step-up, lumpsum & inflation above and enter 10% to see how much bigger the final amount gets. Many fund houses and apps let you set this up as a "top-up" option.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How is SIP maturity value calculated?
Each monthly instalment grows at the monthly rate (yearly return ÷ 12) until the end. The total is M × ((1+i)^n − 1) / i × (1+i), with M the monthly amount, i the monthly rate and n the number of months.
What is a step-up SIP?
A step-up (or top-up) SIP raises your monthly instalment by a fixed percentage every year, usually in line with salary hikes. Even a 10% yearly step-up can grow the final amount a lot.
Are SIP returns guaranteed?
No. Mutual fund returns depend on the market and change every year. The calculator assumes a steady average return, so treat the result as an estimate, not a promise.
What return should I assume?
Use a conservative long-term average for the type of fund. Equity funds swing more than debt funds. Checking a lower and a higher rate gives a sensible range.
What does the inflation-adjusted value mean?
It shows what the final amount is worth in today's money, after allowing for prices rising every year at the inflation rate you enter.
